North, Beloved Child Star of “Dennis the Menace,” Passes Away at 73
Jay North, best known for bringing the mischievous
yet lovable Dennis Mitchell to life in the classic CBS sitcom Dennis the
Menace, has passed away at the age of 73. He died peacefully at his home in
Lake Butler, Florida, on Sunday, following a lengthy battle with colorectal
cancer.
The news was shared by longtime friend and
Hollywood historian Laurie Jacobson, who announced his passing in a heartfelt
Facebook post on April 6. Jacobson, who had been close to North for three
decades, confirmed he had "fought cancer for a number of years" and
described his final moments as peaceful. His representative later confirmed the
news to PEOPLE
.
“Jay passed away this morning at noon EST,”
Jacobson wrote. “Our dear friend had a heart as big as a mountain. He faced
many struggles throughout and beyond his Hollywood years, but he never let them
define him.”
North captured the hearts of millions from 1959 to
1963 as Dennis Mitchell, the charming, towheaded troublemaker in overalls whose
innocent antics frequently tested the patience of his grumpy neighbor, Mr.
Wilson—played first by Joseph Kearns and later Gale Gordon. The show also
featured Herbert Anderson and Gloria Henry as Dennis’s parents
.
Though his post-Hollywood journey was marked by
personal challenges, North remained a cherished figure among fans and friends
alike. He is remembered not just for his role as a beloved TV icon, but also
for his resilience, warmth, and unwavering loyalty to those closest to him.
Jay North’s legacy as a pioneering child actor
lives on, continuing to bring joy to audiences across generations.
