In what could be a defining moment in the search
for extraterrestrial life, scientists at the University of Cambridge have
announced the most compelling evidence yet that life may exist on a planet
beyond our solar system. The findings, made using NASA’s James Webb Space
Telescope (JWST), reveal chemical fingerprints in the atmosphere of exoplanet
K2-18b that—on Earth—are only produced by living organisms.
K2-18b, a “mini-Neptune” located 124 light-years
away in the constellation Leo, is more than twice the size of Earth and is
believed to orbit a small red dwarf star. Despite its vast distance of over 700
trillion miles, the planet’s atmosphere is being closely analyzed through the
advanced capabilities of JWST, which captures and studies the light passing
through it.
The Cambridge research team, led by Professor Nikku
Madhusudhan from the Institute of Astronomy, has detected possible signs of two
key molecules—dimethyl sulphide (DMS) and dimethyl disulphide (DMDS). On Earth,
these gases are primarily emitted by marine phytoplankton and certain bacteria,
making them strong biosignature candidates.
“This is the strongest evidence yet there is
possibly life out there,” Prof Madhusudhan stated. “I can realistically say
that we can confirm this signal within one to two years.”
The discovery builds on a previous detection of
life-associated chemicals on the same planet but is considered far more
promising due to the concentration and clarity of the new data. According to
Madhusudhan, the estimated levels of these gases on K2-18b are thousands of
times higher than what is found in Earth’s atmosphere—potentially indicating a
vibrant, life-rich environment.
“If the association with life is real, then this
planet will be teeming with life,” he added. “And if we confirm that there is
life on K2-18b, it should basically confirm that life is very common in the
galaxy.”
Dr Subir Sarkar, an astrophysicist from Cardiff
University who is also part of the research team, hinted at an even more
exciting possibility—the presence of a vast ocean on K2-18b that could support
life. However, he urged caution: “We don’t know for sure. But keep watching
this space.”
Independent astronomers are hailing the results as
a major milestone, though all agree that more data and repeated observations
are needed to confirm the findings. Still, the implications are profound.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5Live, Prof Madhusudhan
emphasized the broader significance: “This is a very important moment in
science, but also very important to us as a species. If there is one example
[of life elsewhere], and the universe being infinite, there is a chance for
life on many more planets.”
With further observations already planned, the
world now waits with bated breath. Could we finally be on the verge of
answering the age-old question: Are we alone in the universe?
