Thousands report Spotify problems around the world

Spotify Down: Tens of Thousands Hit by Global Streaming Outage

Music lovers around the world were left frustrated as Spotify experienced a major outage, leaving tens of thousands unable to stream their favorite tunes.

According to Downdetector, a website that monitors service interruptions, over 40,000 users reported issues with the music streaming giant starting Wednesday afternoon around 13:30 GMT. The disruption was widespread, affecting users in the US, UK, and across Europe.

The glitch primarily affected the search feature and the ability to view artist profiles, with users receiving an error message reading:

"Something went wrong."
A refresh button appeared, but for many, it didn’t do much.

What Still Worked?

Interestingly, downloaded songs still played without a hitch. However, users couldn’t search for new music, access artist pages, or discover fresh playlists — a core part of Spotify’s charm.

Spotify's Response

The company acknowledged the issue, saying:

“We’re aware of some issues right now and are checking them out.”

Later, Spotify confirmed to the BBC that the search issue had been addressed and an update was being rolled out — though it's unclear exactly when full functionality will be restored for all users.

Frustrated Fans Take to Social Media

As expected, the outage sparked a wave of reactions on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), where users voiced their frustration:

  • One user begged for a quick fix, saying their revision routine was ruined.

  • Another shared their annoyance, posting they were mid-workout when the app crashed.

  • Some even threatened to switch to competitors like YouTube Music or Apple Music.
